What’s up with parking?

When trying to find a parking spot on city streets, even natives in Montreal frequently scratch their heads. The majority of parking in the city is in metered spaces or public parking lots, so you don’t have to guess where you may leave your car. Major streets outside of the downtown area run on a meter, whereas residential areas typically have free, albeit insufficient, on-street parking.

Prices at the meters range from $1.50 (in a few districts outside of downtown, notably Saint-Henri) to $3.50 per hour (downtown and high-demand areas like the Old Port). However, on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, on-street parking in downtown is free until September 6. This way, you now know at what times is best to enjoy luxury rides in Montreal.

Everywhere You Go, There is a Sign

Now that you’ve reviewed your French let’s debunk the myths surrounding the parking sign in Montréal. The only significant difference between Montréal and other big cities is that our driving signage is French. In light of this, it is beneficial to be conversant in a few essential basic French vocabulary, such as arrêt (halt), rue (street), route barrée (road closed), sortie (exit), (bridge), and the center-ville above (downtown).

Montréal parking signs 101

  • Parking sign times are displayed using a 24-hour clock (e.g., 19h is 7 pm).
  • If a roadway appears with “no parking” signs, don’t be deterred. Signs almost always state when parking is prohibited, not when it is permitted.
  •  Parking lots for permit holders only and open to the public are frequently mixed in streets. The spaces reserved for permit holders will have signs with a red square in the bottom right corner displaying the parking zone number (for example, “55”) and an arrow pointing toward the street where they are permitted to park and you are not. Parking is allowed in areas of the road where there are signs but not the tiny red square.
  • Pay attention to the times. Some streets only permit parking for one or two hours (usually in shopping areas). Except for a brief window on one particular day when street cleaning takes place, you can park on other streets throughout the entire week.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask a local person where it’s okay to park if the notice is still unclear. We all engage in it.

And Then There is Always…

Leave your car parked for your visit and rock out on your stroll. Montréal has an excellent public transit system (the STM) that will take you anywhere you need. It is also a reasonably small, walkable city. And sure, you can ride a bus to Mount Royal’s summit.
